"While hiking the resplendent Split in my home province of Nova Scotia, I pondered the power of surging tide and wind, glimmering beauty of sea, chance encounters and destiny. It seemed all too surreal to pass upon as mere memory...
Originally, I composed the opening horn for trombone, to set up the coastline of my origin and myth. Indeed, a lot of the lyric is latent portent, and its dark currents of love, loss and the afterlife resonate profoundly.
From my teaching studio post in the West, I heard the history of jazz & blues across the hall, in Jerry Cook's saxophone (Guitar Shorty, Pinetop Perkins, Frankie Lee, Big Joe Duskin.,Crash, Powder Blues). It only took me three years to clear my head of divorce and ask if he would grace the tune. His always welcome warm tone, at once harkens back to an era of "players" full of personality. I could not be more pleased with the result of our collaboration, after one rehearsal! Not to mention, a superlative, tight rhythm section, in bassist Craig Strain of (PickPocket) and Emyln Scherk (The Real Ponchos) I hope you enjoy the journey in sound and song, too.
lyrics
We run out along the Bay of Fundy
Rolling in the hay under a laden sky
Our hearts were racing -- our minds eager
Hoping there would never be lies...
The horses are tethered and neighing at dawn
The church bells are ringing
There's a new bride in love
You've got to follow your dreams into the mist
If you don't you can't say you've ever really lived
Like an Alex Colville, come to life!
The portent, the sky, check the time, then the tide,
Questions you're left wondering why?
In these... Lazy Days of May
What is it with these pin dots of meeting spots
On maps that remind me of your face?
I'm connected to this watery place with grace
Every year I return like a migrating bird...
Time and again
What Choice do we have in love?
What chance can we take at all?
When we fight like cats with claws
Make up like Saints and lovers
In these Lazy Days of May
It might be the rage of the Atlantic
Knocking down your door
Or the last song you'll hear from a gull on a cliff
Down here surf is up
You're the ultimate ...serve my cup
Let me hold your hands
Until they turn to dust
That’s what it means to be
In these Lazy Days of Love
Write your name in the sand
Unlearn what you have discovered
When the clouds open, I'll be waiting...
Like an Alex Colville, come to life
the questions , the portent, the sky.
